Exposures Photography Competition Prospectus

Caldwell Arts Council announces the “EXPOSURES Photography Competition,” featuring judge Lynn Willis of Valle Crucis, NC. Up to $600 in cash prizes will be awarded.   

This year, no traditional gallery show of entries or opening reception will be held due to COVID-19.


Eligibility and Guidelines:

  • Photographers, age 18+, who reside in Alexander, Catawba, Burke, or Caldwell counties in North Carolina.
  • The deadline for all online entries is midnight, January 8, 2021.
  • Each artist may submit images for up to two photographs for a low entry fee of $10.
  • All entries AND entry fees must be submitted electronically. See below for submission and payment details. No in-person or mailed/shipped entries will be accepted.
  • Also no mailed checks or in-person payments will be accepted.
  • Photography must not have been created before January 1, 2019
  • Previously entered artwork is not eligible for submission.
  • All entries will be judged virtually from the images of the works submitted by the artist.
  • Winning entrants must agree to allow images of their artwork to be posted on the Caldwell Arts Council’s website and/or to be used in subsequent marketing/promotional materials by the Caldwell Arts Council.
  • Entrants reserve/keep all other rights to their artwork.
  • Caldwell Arts Council staff, board members and their immediate family members are ineligible to enter.

Judging, Awards and Online Exhibition

  • Judge is Lynn Willis of Valle Cruces, NC. See judge’s bio below.
  • The judge’s decisions are final.
  • $200 Best of Show, $100 Judge’s Merit Award for Traditional Photography, and $100 Judge’s Merit Award for Abstract Photography, and four $50 Honorable Mention Awards.   
  • Winners will be notified by January 15, 2021.
  • The show of entries will be virtual only with images placed on our website at  www.caldwellarts.com. In addition, announcements about the winners will be shared to social media and other outlets.
  • The online exhibition will be held January 18-February 28, 2021.

About the  Judge

Lynn Willis moved to the High Country of North Carolina 25 years ago specifically for the Linville Gorge and the superb rock climbing in the region. He is a graphic designer, photographer, and owner of High South Creative. He resides in Valle Crucis and his portfolio focuses on portraying outdoor sports and landscape images specific to the Blue Ridge Mountains, as well as portrait and event photography. His work has been published in calendars, books, catalogs, websites, regional and national magazines, Associated Press, and the Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition. Lynn is a photographer in various capacities for Appalachian State University and teaches one-on-one and group photography instruction. He is also the publisher of the Boone Region Outdoor Recreation Map and Guide. His personal projects include donating his images for environmental causes, land protection with conservancy groups, and the promotion of local trails, parks, and greenways. How to Submit:

  • Email office@caldwellarts.com with complete entry information listed below and include requested images as attachments. Be sure to use “Exposures Photography Competition” as the subject line of your email.

  • Attach a great quality image of each submission in .jpg format with file size at least 1MB but no larger than 3MB each (at least 1,000 pixels on the smallest edge).
  • Title each image with your Last Name, First Name - Image Title (i.e.,  McCoy, Cathy - Last Dance). 
  • Electronically submit your entry fee of $10 by clicking the website link for payment via PayPal. You do not need a PayPal account to submit payment using this link. No in-person or mailed payments, cash or checks will be accepted.
  • Entries and payment must be submitted online and received by the Caldwell Arts Council by midnight, January 8, 2021.
