SCULPTURE CELEBRATION 2017 IS SCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER 9, 2017

 Last year 7 sculptors sold works totaling about $7,000,
and others received commissions for future work!

LIABILITY:

By registering for this event, you agree that you shall make any and all efforts to secure the work to ensure the safety of visitors, other artists, and other works of art against damage or injury.

REGISTRATION INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING (free):
Sculptors Welcome Dinner Friday evening (free for registered sculptors; $20/each for additional guests paid in advance, $25 onsite) -
includes both meat and vegetable entrees, paleo-friendly entree (traditional Beef Lasagna, Verde Veggie Lasagna, Buffalo Chicken Casserole), rolls, salad with choice of dressings, veggie and fruit trays, several desserts, tea, lemonade & water (due to new City of Lenoir ruling in late 2016, no alcoholic beverages may be served in the park.

Registration fees are non-refundable, but we can credit your payment as a donation for tax purposes OR TOWARD NEXT YEAR'S REGISTRATION if you are unable to attend.

PRE-PRINTED SIGNAGE - Email your titles, medium and selling price along with your website if you have one to info@caldwellarts.com prior to September 1st so we can prepare printed signage in advance Last-minute registrations will receive hand-written signage.

 

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:

Friday, September 8:

10a-7p -      Park opens for pre-registered sculptors, on-site registration, site selection & setup; crane available for unloading large sculptures (this needs to be pre-arranged so please use early registration). We will NOT begin check-in until 10:00 a.m.

7pm -           Sculptors Welcome Dinner* 

8pm -           Introductions, Judge's presentation

Saturday, September 9:

7-8:45am -  Park opens for on-site registration, site selection & set-up. Only small trucks allowed in park & must be removed by 8:45am; Continental breakfast available free for sculptors

9a -             Exhibition opens; judging begins for awards

10a-3p -      Live Music in the park; food vendors and children's art activities

3:15 -          All sculptors come to the awards presentation area (main deck)

3:30 -          Awards presentation, followed by Judge's walking tour/talk about winning sculptures

4pm -          Exhibition closes; begin to remove sculptures from the park; crane available for loading (must be pre-registered for this assistance)

 

 

JUDGE DAN PRICE
Dan Price lives and works in Chicago, IL where he is Chair and Associate Professor of Sculpture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He holds a B.A. in Fine Art from the Colorado College and a M.F.A. in Sculpture with honors from the Rhode Island School of Design.

Price has exhibited at the Kennedy Museum in Athens, Ohio; Triple Candie Gallery, New York; White Columns Gallery, New York; Angstrom Gallery in Los Angeles and at the Rhode Island School of Design Art Museum in Providence.

Price has been artist-in-residence at Kohler Co. in Kohler, Wisconsin, the European Ceramic Workcenter in the Netherlands, Fishers Co. in Finland, Scottish Sculpture Workshop in Scotland, Art Omi in New York, Can Serrat in Spain, Elsewhere in Greensboro, NC, and the Banff Centre in Canada. He is trained as a blacksmith and fabricator and has been working with metal since 1996.

 

CRANE ASSISTANCE:
Provided free for pre-registered sculptors who pre-request it - Available Friday only for offloading and Saturday afternoon for loading up

There is also one first-floor apartment with two twin beds, private bathroom, kitchenette and roomy living room for $100 / night. UNLOADING, LOADING, PARKING & OTHER INSTRUCTIONS AND INFORMATION:

  • Bring any pedestals, tables, chairs, hand-trucks, leveling aids, canopy tents, etc. that you may need
  • You can enter the park with your vehicle to unload/reload - then park your vehicle in the sculptors parking area provided at the park.
  • Vehicles with trailers will park down in the Broyhill Foundation lot.

  • A crane/boom truck is provided on Friday only to pre-registered sculptors who have requested it & Saturday for loading up
  • ONLY the 3 sculptures you enter in the competition may be in the park (no 'craft booths' and no extra items for sale in the park) 
  • Your 3 sculptures may be for sale - you handle those sales directly, there's no consignment fee. (We'd love to know if you have sales/commissions as that helps us market the event in the future!) All sculptures must remain in the park until 4pm (purchasers need to pick up after 4pm)
  • Remember to bring your artwork portfolio & business cards, as several attendees typically receive commissions for future works
  • Several food vendors will be in the park Saturday; you can feel free to bring your own snacks/drinks; pets on leashes are welcome
  • You may not pre-select your space at the park - everyone is First Come-First Served on picking your spots for your sculptures.
  • All 3 sculptures do not have to be placed together.

THINGS TO DO WHILE VISITING LENOIR  (click here ... there are hundreds of things to do!)

 Another event occurring just after Sculpture Celebration ends - SEPTEMBER 9 – BLOWING ROCK – 5pm – Blowing Rock Historical Society will publicly present a life-size bronze sculpture of artist Elliott Daingerfield (1859-1932). The sculpture was created by renowned artist Brenda Mauney Councill.  A dedication ceremony will be held downtown on the lawn of Edgewood Cottage, his forst summer home and studio in the NC mountains. Public cordially invited.

*SCULPTORS WELCOME DINNER:
Friday, September 8th at 7pm at the TH Broyhill Walking Park 

Sculptors, Judge, sponsors and guests gather for a casual buffet dinner and live music, followed by the Judge's presentation. Talk about your work, meet our sponsors, and make friends in this party-like atmosphere. This event is included free with your registration; additional guests meals are $20/person in advance or $25/person on site. Dinner includes meat and vegetarian options (traditional Beef Lasagna, Verde Vegetable Lasagna (a wonderful creamy concoction including asparagus & spinach & ricotta), and Sweet Potato-Buffalo Chicken Casserole (paleo & gluten friendly), fruit and veggie tray, salad, bread, sweet/unsweet tea, beer & wine (if allowed at location) and a variety of desserts.  


In case of rain, the Sculptors Welcome Dinner may be moved to the nearby Mulberry Recreation Center (720 Mulberry St SW, Lenoir), but the Sculpture Celebration on Saturday goes on rain or shine in the TH Broyhill Walking Park.

 

SEPTEMBER EXHIBIT AT THE CALDWELL ARTS COUNCIL
"MODERN TRADITIONS" is an exhibit of furniture by artists Christina Boy and Richard Prisco and wall art by artists Ann Ehringhaus, Julia Lawing, Nick Deford and Jim Arendt.  The Caldwell Arts Council is about one mile from the park, and we hope you'll come see this exhibit Friday 9-5 or Saturday 10-2!
